Lesson 23 - Wahi - Revelation

So far we have covered approximately forty years of the life of our Prophet Muhammed.
This term the last portion of the Makkan life will be analysed; this will include 1) The period of revelation, 2) Preaching, 3) Hardship 4)Struggle.
The stage to Wahi was reached in stages.
Why? Three stages to Wahi 1. Seclusion 2. Dreams 3. Wahi

Seclusion 1. “Thereafter, solitude was made dear to him. He would often go to cave for seclusion”. 2. Whenever Allah chooses mercy on servant Allah creates seclusion within the heart, 3. (Kahf: 16) (Maryam:49) 4. While in seclusion he would receive Kashf and Ilham on the shariah of Ibrahim. 5. Prior to gaining Prophet hood, Prophet would dedicate whole month every year in seclusion. (Bayhaqi)

 Benefits of seclusion:

Dreams – This topic was covered in extensive detail from Lesson 20 to Lesson 23

 Wahi Definiton:7
Literal Meaning: Awha – Yuhee – to reveal, to inspire something in the heart, (Musa’s Mother )to say something in a whisper tone that only the hearer hears it clearly but not the person standing close to him, to indicate quickly (Zakriya A.s) Mentioned nearly 50 times in the quran: Nisaa 4:163, Maidah 5:111,An’am 6:19. The meaning is slightly difference according to the context.

Shar’I Meaning: كلام الله المنزل علي نبي من انبيائه Allah’s speech that is revealed to Prophets. Reason of Wahi: A person can understand things with two senses: 1) Physical sense – 2) Intellectual sense – But knowledge of the unseen is at a high stage that it cannot be understood with human sense or intellect. Hence, Wahi is needed to teach us that knowledge. However, A minor glimpse of divine revelation is awarded to us in the form of true dreams.

Types: 1) Wahi Qalbi – Puts Wahi in heart without any angel, no noise. It comes in form of awakeness. Like Ibrahim (A.S)’s command to sacrifice his Ismail. 2) Kalam Ilahi – No noise – but Nabi can hear the voice. Like Allah talked to Musa 3) Wahi Malaki – Through a angel, sometimes the angel is seen, sometimes not. All three of these types are mentioned in the Qur’an. “It does not befit a man to talk to Allah directly, except wahi, or behind veil or messenger.; 4) Ringing bells: (Only this much mentioned in hadit)

Ulama had said its meaning: 1) it was angels voice 2) angels wings flapping Very hard on the Prophet: Aysha on a cold day when wahi finished sweat would be dripping. 2) Change colour to branch of Kajoor tree into yellow. 3) Sit on camel and camel would sit 4) Bees would move away from prophet when wahi. 5) in form of human – 1) Hadhrat Dihya Kalbi. Very handsome 2) normal form – Hadeeth Jibreel.

True Dreams: Prophet was shown dreams. • Aysha Narrates “Wahi started for the Prophet with Pious dreams, whatever he witness would come true as the crack of dawn”. (Bukhari & Muslim) • What does it mean by ‘Similarity to crack of dawn’? 1. Crack dawn not arrived similarly Prophet hood not arrived. 2. Soon the sun will rise similarly the prophet hood will arrive.

Procedure of Wahi to Prophet; Mentioned in Bukhari: “Sometimes it would come in form of ringing bells. This type is the hardest upon me, then when this type finished, a sound would be heard then I would learn it. On some occasions a angel in human form would come”.

Wahi Matl’u and Wahi Ghair Mat’lu: Matlu – Quran Gahir Matlu - Hadith
